About Swifts Retreat
Nestled in the heart of the Rangitikei and surrounded by beautiful Central Plateau farmland, Swifts Retreat is where farm life meets luxury. Powered by solar energy, it’s a retreat that blends modern comfort with sustainable living.
Our off-grid home has been thoughtfully designed using passive building techniques, utilising natural light and insulation to create a space that stays warm in winter and cool in summer without the need for constant heating and cooling. Combined with solar utilisation, we have created a sustainable space to enjoy while still offering all the luxuries you’d expect from a modern getaway.
How does solar Work?
At Swifts Retreat, our power comes from the sun. Two arrays of solar panels capture the suns power which is stored in advanced battery systems and managed through a Victron setup (with a backup generator). This keeps everything running smoothly day and night, ensuring reliable power no matter the season.
What is ‘passive’ building?
Passive building techniques focus on using design and building elements that minimise energy consumption. Key strategies/techniques include; building orientation, insulation, air tightness and high performance windows. Swifts retreat is north facing which maximises natural warmth from the sun and has been built using insulated EPS panels and triple glazed doors/windows to maximise retention of heat.
